Question 1. => A system absorbs 500J of Heat and does work of 50J on its surroundings. Calculate the change in internal energy.

Question 2. => 200J of work is done on the system and at the same time, 140J of heat is given out. What is the change in internal energy ?

ΔQ = ΔU + ΔW

Here,

ΔQ = Heat supplied

ΔU = Change in internal energy

ΔW = Work done

Question 1

Given:

ΔQ = 500J

ΔW = 50J

500 = ΔU + 50

ΔU = 450J

Question 2

Given:

ΔQ = -140J

(-ve as heat is removed)

ΔW = -200J

(work done is -ve as its losing energy)

-140 = ΔU + (-200)

-140 + 200 = ΔU

ΔU = 60J
