Explanation:

.In most systems the terrace is a low, flat ridge of earth built across the slope, with a channel for runoff water just above the ridge. Usually terraces are built on a slight grade so that the water caught in the channel moves slowly toward the terrace outlet.

.The significant advantage is the preservation of soil and water. Terraces diminish both the sum and speed of water moving over the soil surface, which incredibly lessens soil erosion.

.Soil erosion occurs when the water with high velocity runs down washing the soil. As many terrace or step like slopes are present in terrace farming it reduces the speed as well as the quantity of water moving over the soil surface as a result of which it checks soil erosion by preventing it.

.Terrace farming is practised mainly in hilly areas. In India, it is practised in hilly areas mainly like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and some northeast states. It is also practised in South area, like Andhra Pradesh.

.Soil is the basis for sustenance for 7 billion people. It preserves clean water and helps regulate the climate. Soil degradation reduces agricultural yields and threatens farmers' livelihoods. Soil that has been leached of its nutrients cannot support crops, or plants that prevent desertification.
