Total mechanical energy of a freely falling body is the sum of its Kinetic Energy (E_{K}) and Potential Energy E_{P}.

Explanation:-

When the object is thrown up in air, Its height from the ground increases and hence its Potential Energy also increases, At a certain velocity when the of the object becomes zero, It has 0 Kinetic energy. However, as the object starts to fall down, the Potential energy gradually starts get converting into Kinetic Energy, until it hits the ground consuming all its potential energy.
