Answer:

what is dark energy?

In physical cosmology and astronomy, dark energy is an unknown form of energy which is hypothesized to permeate all of space, tending to accelerate the expansion of the universe. ... The density of dark energy is very low (~ 7 × 10−30 g/cm3), much less than the density of ordinary matter or dark matter within galaxies.

what is a brane?

In string theory and related theories such as supergravity theories, a brane is a physical object that generalizes the notion of a point particle to higher dimensions. Branes are dynamical objects which can propagate through spacetime according to the rules of quantum mechanics.

WHAT'S DARK ENERGY?!

Scientists have given the name dark energy to the expansion-generating force or substance of the universe.

Dark energy is the reverse of gravity: It pushes things away rather than pulling them together. It is unknown whether the laws of physics or the general theory of relativity can account for dark energy.

Well, in 1988 astronomers studying supernova found them dimmer than anticipated. This meant both they were farther away and the universe was expanding faster than expected.

The U.S. government's Joint Dark Energy Mission (JDEM) examined Type la supernova, dying white dwarfs, because of their high and consistent luminosity. The program ended in 2010, and will be replaced by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST).

WHAT'S A BRANE?!

Mathematicians and astrophysicists considering the existence of other universes must entertain the possibility of more dimensions than the four we know as space-time: the three familiar dimensions plus the dimension of time, added by Einstein. In one version of string theory, physicist allow for elevan dimensions, including seven that still remain imperceptibly "curled-up".

The visible universe could be a four-dimensional membrane, or brane for short, moving through unseen dimensions. Other branes, or parallel universes, may also exist, floating through a fifth dimension that we cannot perceive.

Well, some scientists propose that our would- be universe existed as a brane into which another brane collided in a uniform fashion, generating the heat energy and expansion accounted for in the big bang.

However, these theories now exist mainly as mathematical models that require much additional investigation.
