♣ Disaster is defined as a sudden or immediate accident or a situation that causes a lot of damage to property , life , etc.

There may be numerous causes of disasters:- fire, earthquakes , tsunamis , etc.

1) MAN - MADE DISASTERS :- These are the disasters caused by the mistakes done by human beings.
Eg :- Accidents in coal mines , fires , etc.

2) NATURAL DISASTERS :- These disasters are caused by natural elements .
Eg :- landslides , natural earthquakes, etc.

3) HYBRID DISASTERS :- These disasters occur due to the interference of human activities due to some technical failure.
Eg :- Bhopal gas tragedy due to which generations have been damaged.

♣ As we know prevention is always better than cure , we should apply the following preventive measures during flood:-

⚠ Seek higher lands so as to be safe.

⚠ Seal walls of the basements with waterproof materials.

⚠ Keeping a good supply of food and water during emergency.

⚠ Not going near gas cylinders , furnaces , low areas etc.

♣ Disasters usually cause a lot of damage to life and property. Several buildings are destroyed, Monuments get ruined , people are killed , etc. Some small disasters may be small in the magnitude of loss but can also be severe. Hence it is necessary that we are ready with all the safety equipments and be aware of these.

♣ As I have mentioned above that disasters are suddenly occurring accidents , it is not always possible to predict them.
We can reduce chances of disasters by not interfering with nature and always be prepared to fight these disasters. We should know the basic preventive measures of disasters.

♣ Remote sensing is the method of acquiring information about an object or phenomenon without getting in contact with it.

Remote sensing is useful in various ways :-

a) For discovering new planets and stars.

b) Predict weather forcastes.

c) Knowing about some natural calamities like hurricanes , tornadoes , tsunamis etc......

♦ Ans. 1 - A disaster is an abrupt happening that seriously disrupts the working of a society and causes human, material, and economic losses

There are millions of causes of any Disaster. But, Human (our)activities play a major role in the increasing frequency and severity of disasters.

♦ Ans. 2 -

§ NATURAL DISASTER:
A natural disaster is a disaster caused by nature, Nature itself is responsible for the Calamity.

Example:
Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, hurricanes, etc.

§ MAN-MADE DISASTER:
A man made disaster is a disaster caused by human beings.

Example:
Nuclear blasts, traffic collisions such as train accidents, plane crashes etc.

§ HYBRID DISASTER:
A hybrid disaster occurs when a natural or man-made hazard causes increased damages as a byproduct of bad deeds/actions.

Example:
Clear cutting in a rain forest increases the vulnerability of nearby villages to flood by removing the vegetation that previously helped absorb rain water, Bhopal Gas tragedy etc.

♦ Ans. 3 - PREVENTIVE METHODS DURING FLOODS:

1. Being alert
2. Don’t drive unless you have to.
If you must drive, travel with care.
3. NEVER drive through flooded roadways
4. Get to high ground – Climb to safety!
5. Never try to walk or swim through flowing water
6. Shut off the electricity at the circuit breakers. etc.
