Explanation:
What is a weaving?
Weaving is an art of making a piece of cloth with warp and weft. Warp is the set of length-wise yarns/threads that are held tightly together in tension on a loom, which is a set-up used for holding warp in place. Weft is a single yarn which is winded over and under the warp yarns, in a repeated manner along the width-wise using the same loom. Usually, warp is interlayered perpendicular to the weft.
There are different ways to make a cloth, even without using looms. For instance knitting, netting, looping, and braiding. These methods depend on the winding a single yarn or few sets of yarn. However, weaving is mainly done with two sets, one is parallel-warp bundle of yarn and the other one is perpendicular-weft yarn.
The old tradition of weaving is performed by hands called hand-loom weaving. With the advent of industrial revolution and motors, it is also performed on a power-loom by steam-power. These both set-ups constitutes similar individual parts up to some extent however, they are used for weaving different types of cloth with various types of yarn materials.
In rural India, the old tradition of hand-loom is still under use to create bridal silk sarees and few other types of cloth. This finesse art cannot be implemented using power-looms as it requires humanly conscious effort to align the each round of weft to make a beautiful design like, the one in the picture below.
