• Sculpture is a creative medium in which solid or flexible materials are shaped into three-dimensional works of art. The designs may take the form of free-standing objects, reliefs on surfaces, or settings ranging from tableaux to environments that enclose the viewer. Clay, wax, stone, metal, fabric, glass, wood, plaster, rubber, and haphazard "found" things are just a few examples of the huge diversity of media that can be employed. Materials may be formed and mixed in a variety of ways, including carving, modelling, moulding, casting, wrought ironwork, welding, sewing, and assembly.
• The term "sculpture" does not refer to a definite group of things or activities that is always included. Instead, it is the term of a discipline of art that continuously broadens the scope of its operations and creates new classes of objects. Due to the fluidity of the visual arts in the twenty-first century, no one can foresee what the term's potential future extensions will be. The scope of the phrase was far greater in the second half of the 20th century than it had been just two or three decades before.
