. Predict the possible products of the
following reaction.
a. chlorination of nitrobenzene,
b. sulfonation of chlorobenzene,
c. bromination of phenol,
d. nitration of toluene.
Explanation:
1. Chlorination of Nitrobenzene
In this reaction chlorine is added to benzene ring as it contains double bond .
Nitro group is meta directing therefore the product formed is : meta chloro nitrobenzene .
2.sulfonation of chlorobenzene,
In this the chlorobenzene is treated with sulphuric acid .As we know cloro group is para directing therefore we get :chloro benzene sulphonic acid .
3. Bromination of phenol
When addition of bromine to phenol occurs we get : 2,4,6 tribromophenol in aqueous medium and in presence of carbon disulphide we get : its isomers that is ortho bromophenol and para bromo phenol .
4.Nitration of toluene.
When nitration of toulene is conducted we get : p-nitro toulene
