Resources can be classified as Biotic and Abiotic on the basis of origin:-

Resources obtained from the biosphere, like forests, wildlife, fisheries, livestock, human beings, etc., which have life, are called biotic resources.

Resources which are obtained from non-living things are called abiotic resources. Iron, copper, gold and lead are abiotic resources.

1: Resources can broadly be classified upon their availability — they are classified into renewable and non-renewable resources. Examples of non renewable resources are coal, crude oil etc. Examples of renewable resources are air, water, natural gas, wind, solar energy, etc.

2:The resources which can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or mechanical processes are known as renewable or replenishable resources. For example, solar and wind energy, water, forests and wildlife, etc.

3: Non-renewable resources occur over a very long geological time. Minerals and fossil fuels are examples of such resources. These resources take millions of years in their formation. Some of the resources like metals are recyclable and some like fossil fuels cannot be recycled and get exhausted with their use

Classification of resources

The two most common resource classifications are:

Natural resources – Natural resources can be defined as the resources that exist on the planet independent of human actions.

Human resources – Human resources refers to the individuals who make up an organization’s, business sector’s, industry’s, or economy’s workers.

Natural resource can be further classified as

Renewable resource – These are the resources which can reproduced or renewed through various mechanical, chemical or physical process.

Non-renewable resource – These are the resources which takes millions of years for its formation. Examples like coal, petroleum, natural gas etc.

Natural resources are classified according to their development and use are,

Potential resources – The resources that are present in a specific region and can be used in the future are classified as potential resources.

Actual resources – Actual resources are the resources where quantity is known which are being used in the present.

Classification of Resources

Resources can be classified in the following ways
