Rabindranath tagore renounced his knighthood after the jallianwala bagh tragedy on 13th April 1919. Many innocent people lost their life. The people of Amritsar were forced into indignities like crawling on the bellies before the European, stripping and whipping of the people on the open street. Rabindranath in protest gave up his title of knighthood.
