Rabindranath Tagore
was born on the 7th of May in year 1861 in Bengal. He was a freedom fighter, a revolutioner, great writer, painter, musician and poet. It was during 1913 that he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his book, 'Gitanjali ',a collection of poems. Tagore in 1919, criticized the British Government for the inhuman firing on hundreds of men, women and children at Jallianwala Bagh. He returned the title 'Sir ' given to him by the British government. Such was his patriotism. He is also well known for his contribution to the field of education. He opened a school at Bolpur in West Bengal. It is called Shantiniketan. It is a school where children study out in the open, under the trees. Children act their own plays and sings and dance. These are the methods used here to educate children. How delightful it must be! Later on Tagore established a university called 'Vishwabharati', where students from all parts of the world come to study. Tagore died on August 7, 1941. Even till today the entire nation thrills to the tune of Jana Gana Mana, the national anthem composed by him. Such was the magic of this man.

Rabindranath Tagore was an awesome Indian poet, author, novelist, patriot and educationist. He was born on 7th of May in 1861 in Calcutta. He was the son of debendranath Tagore (Father) and Sarada Devi (Mother). He was popular among people by one more name "Gurudev"
He contributed to Indian literature a lot. A song composed by Gurudev "Jana Gana Mana" later became our National Anthem and also the National Anthem of Bangladesh. He is also famous for his great book "Gitanjali". It was the book he got the Nobel Prize in 1913. And yes, he was the first Indian and also the first Asian to receive Nobel Prize.
He was one of the advocates of education during the early 19th century. He established the "Visva Bharati University" at Santiniketan. He wanted to combine the best elements of Western and Indian educational systems.
