Radhika went to a store and bought 24 pieces of fruits. She purchased three times as many oranges as bananas. On her way home she accidentally dropped twice as many oranges as bananas. She still took home 15 pieces of fruit. How many oranges were there when she reached home?

Answer:

12 oranges

Step-by-step explanation:

Define the fruits bought:

Let the number of bananas bought = x

Number of oranges bought = 3x

Total fruits = x + 3x = 4x

Solve x

/* Total number of fruits bought is 24 */

4x = 24

/* Divide both siders by 4 */

x = 6

Find the number of fruits bought

Bananas = x = 6

Oranges = 3x = 3(6) = 18

Define the fruits dropped:

Let the number of bananas dropped = y

Number of oranges dropped = 2y

Total fruits dropped = y + 2y = 3y

Solve y:

/* Fruits bought = 24 */

/* Fruits left = 15 */

24 - 3y = 15

/* Subtract 24 from both sides */

-3y = -9

/* Divide both sides by - 3 */

y = 3

Find the number of oranges left:

Oranges  bought = 18

Oranges dropped = 2y = 2(3) = 6

Oranges left = 18 - 6 = 12

Answer: 12 oranges
