Alpha Radiation

Alpha radiation occurs when a particle comprising two protons and two neutrons is released from an unstable nucleus. This "alpha particle" is equivalent to a helium nucleus and is positively charged because of its proton content. The loss of an alpha particle means that the original element is transformed into another one. Alpha radiation travels only a short distance through the air and cannot penetrate human skin or clothing. However, it is harmful to humans if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through open wounds.
