Suppose AB is the chord. O is the centre of the circle.
If OM is the perpendicular drawn from O to AB as its distance, then OAM and OMB are both right angled triangles.
Since, length of the chord is 12cm, both AM and MB =212=6 cm
Now, radius of the circle OB=10 cm
Using Pythagoras theorem, we have
⇒OB2=OM2+MB2
⇒102=OM2+62
⇒OM2=100−36=64
⇒ distance =OM=64=8cm
