Hi friend ,
Ragpickers act as saviours for municipal corporations . Municipal solid waste involves the household waste ,construction and demolition debris ,sanitation residue, etc. Ragpicking is the cheapest mode of waste management ,as they do this job in less time and wages . It helps in segregation of waste at ground and initial level. The ragpickers carry a magnet with them,by which they segregate the metals from the garbage . Ragpickers also help to segregate the waste into biodegradable and non - biogedradable , and avid mixing of two.

waste management is done at various levels, in which rag pickers play a very crucial role. this is an informal sector and the backbone of waste management, specially plastic and solid wastes.
rag pickers segregate-
1)mixed waste into plastic, paper and bottles, putting tgemselves to risk of getting bruises and cuts. they also get exposed to various infection causing microbes and hence are prone to such infectious diseases.
2)they are poorly paid, work for 9-12 hours everyday for 6 days a week. thus, are cheapest mode of waste management.
3)they also segregate biodegradable from non-biodegradable wastes. this helpes in reuse, recycle of non-biodegradable waste and useful product formation like compost from biodegradable wastes.
