Ragpickers are individuals who look/sift through heaps of garbage in search of anything that they might be useful to them. Since ragpickers are poor and unhygienic, society looks down upon them. However, their contribution to society is immense.

Increasing recycling- ragpickers pick out recyclable materials from garbage. These things are sold to scrap dealers, which is how ragpickers earn a livelihood. This reduces the amount of garbage and increases recycling. During times when we are trying to fight pollution and global warming, these ragpickers step in and sort the garbage manually, making the sorting even more effective, thus quietly reducing the severity of environmental problems.
