To find :

Total number of parrots.

Solution :

Let total number of parrots be 'x'

So number of parrots flew away = 20% of x

Number of parrots died = 10% of x

Remaining parrots = 14

So atq,

⇒ 20% of x + 10% of x + 14 = x

⇒ (20/100) of x + (10/100) of x + 14 = x

⇒ (1/5) of x + (1/10) of x + 14 = x

⇒ x/5 + x/10 + 14 = x

⇒ (2x + x + 140)/10 = x

⇒ 3x + 140 = 10x

⇒ 10x - 3x = 140

⇒ 7x = 140

⇒ x = 140/7

⇒ x = 20

∴ Total number of parrots purchased = 20

Let the purchased parrots be x, then the parrots which flew away is 20 % then the number of parrots will be 20 % of total parrots (x), similarly the parrots which died is 10 % then the number of parrots will be 10 % of total parrots (x) and we know that the parrots which are left are 14, so if you add all the parrots (values), we get the parrots which are purchased by Rahul.

• 20 % of x + 10 % of x + 14 = x
• ²⁰⁄₁₀₀ (x) + ¹⁰⁄₁₀₀ (x) + 14 = x
• ⅕ (x) + ⅒ (x) + 14 = x
• x/5 + x/10 + 14 = x
• (2x + x + 140)/10 = x
• (3x + 140)/10 = x
• (3x + 140) = 10x
• 10x - 3x = 140
• 7x = 140
• x = ¹⁴⁰⁄₇
