. Rahul was a student of class 7. His father purchased a new bicycle for him on his birthday. After few months, he found that the cycle chain and even the handle gets rusted. His father advised him to apply a coating of paint to the cycle and not to keep it in the open future. a) Why his cycle gets rusted? b) What do you mean by rusting of iron? c) What values are shown by Rahul’s father?
Answers
a) Why his cycle gets rusted?
Ans) Rahul's cycle gets rusted because of been kept outside opened. It has exposed outside, where both air and moisture are present. An object starts rusting, when it comes in contact with oxygen, moisture and water.
b) What do you mean by rusting of iron?
Ans) Rusting of iron is a chemical reaction. It is the process in which metals are eaten up, by the action of air, moisture and acid. This chemical reaction is also known as oxidation. In this chemical reaction, iron is converted into iron oxide. And forms a reddish, flaky appearance on the surface of the object. Rusting of iron is a common form of corrosion. It weakens the iron object and cuts short their life.
c) What values are shown by Rahul’s father?
Ans) Rahul's father advised him to apply a coating of paint to the cycle and not to keep it in the open future because coating of paints prevents rusting. Objects which are made up of iron gets oxidised (starts rusting ) when they come in contact with the moisture. To avoid rusting, different coatings can be applied to the metal. Such are by applying oil, dry coating, painting, greasing, galvanising and blueing.
- The ferrous metal is one that contains iron and only iron can rust.
- Rusting process begins when iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water, oxygen or, chemicals.
- Water is the first enemy of iron, which leads to rusting.
- Large areas of rust form, may cause the entire metal structure to rust.
- Metals which were left outdoors, like as cars, cycle, bikes, railings, bridges, gates, are more likely to rust.
- Dipping metal objects, into a bluing solution of water, sodium hydroxide, and potassium nitrate, prevents rusting.
- We can also do galvanising to an iron object. In the galvanising process, a piece of steel is coated with liquid zinc.
