Answer:

Road transport in India is complementary to railways in the following ways

(i) Road transport is suitable for short distances, whereas rail transport is more suitable for long distances.

(ii) Bulky and non-perishable goods are transported by railways over long distances and longer time, whereas perishable goods can be transported by roads in shorter time.

(iii) Railways can halt only at specie destinations where loading/unloading facilities are available, but vehicles on the road can be loaded or unloaded virtually anywhere.
