Given :

▪ Speed of rain = 35mps (Downward)

▪ Speed of wind = 12mps (E to W)

To Find :

▪ In which direction should a boy hold his umbrella to protect him self.

Diagram :

→ Please, see the attachment for better understanding.

Calculation :

→ In attachment, Vr representes the velocity of rain and Vw, the velocity of the wind.

→ To protect himself from rain, the boy should hold her umbrella in the direction of relative velocity of rain wrt the wind Vrw.

From attached image,

\dashrightarrow\sf\:tan\theta=\dfrac{V_w}{V_r}\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\sf\:tan\theta=\dfrac{12}{35}\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\underline{\boxed{\bf{\purple{\pink{\theta=tan^{-1}{\huge(}\dfrac{12}{35}{\huge)}=19.6\degree}}}}}\:\orange{\bigstar}

→ Therefore, the boy should hold his umbrella at an angle of 19.6° with te vertical towards the west.
