Answer:

Mind keeps thinking one thing or the other. It is its nature.

When the memories associated with a person are pleasant and there  happens to be nothing else occupying the mind at that time, then the mind  projects a thought of that person who is absent and you feel you miss his presence.

It is not due to the other person thinking about you at the same time as one might hope and wish ( and as given in the detail). There is no other special  psychological fact. Don't you sometimes miss your childhood if the memories of childhood incidents that resurface are pleasant? Don't you  sometimes miss an experience whether it relates to food, travel, or movie? The same way you miss a person - sometimes. When the present is more pleasant and exhilarating, you don't miss the past. You are happy to stay in the present. Nothing more and nothing less.

When we remember someone or something which was very close to us its absence makes us sad, because of our addiction to that person or the things.

The biggest is our addiction we cannot stay happy without that thing or a person.

This is the only reason for becoming sad at the absence of them.
