Liquid and ice precipitation. Hailstones are precipitations or water accumulated in the atmosphere. Hail is created when small water drops freeze commonly in the upper areas of thunderstorm clouds.

These ice chunks are known as hailstones.

Almost all hailstones are between 5 millimeters to 15 centimeters in diameter.

They can also be jagged or round. These are not raindrops that have frozen.

Frozen rain descends as water only and starts freezing as it approaches the ground. Hailstorms actually descend as a solid.
