So, thé answer is.. : Most of us Indians are outraged. Prices of food articles are rising so fast, that too for at least around 2 years now, that almost everyone except the really rich is beginning to feel the pinch. We are all familiar with the kind of trade-offs people have to make in order to make their ends – ensuring a well-balanced and nutritious diet, especially for their children, and doing that within their disposable income – meet. A number of people are consuming a small fraction of their consumption prior to this price rise. Many others have chosen to buy fruits and vegetables a notch or two lower in quality. A significant number have chosen to restrict themselves to that which they can afford or just cannot avoid. The most stunning aspect of the price rise is the shooting prices of articles considered fundamental to the Indian diet. When onion prices reach and refuse to budge below prices in the range of Rs. 50-60 a kg, it really brings tears to the eyes of the ordinary Indian.
Most Indians are also frustrated that the people, agencies and institutions that they look forward to to control this apparently uncontrollable price spiral have failed miserably in their efforts to do so. The heroes of earlier crises have become the zeros of today. The respected economists whose grasp of these complex issues seemed sublime suddenly look like blundering fools. So much so that one of them recently commented that the current round of inflation reflects rising prosperity in India. Some definition of prosperity it is, considering that most Indians are eating far less and/or far poorer than they were just a couple of years ago or have made other sacrifices in order to keep their diet wholesome and nutritious.
