Raj leaves his home and goes straight 20 meters to point P, then turns right and goes 10 meters to reach point Q. He then turns left and goes 30 meters to reach point R and finally turns right and starts walking. Q22. What is the shortest distance between point P and point R?

Given:

OP=20, then turns right

PQ=10, then turns left

QR=30, then turns right

To Find:

Shortest distance between P and R.

Solution:

Plot the above conditions in a diagram,

As we can see that P Q R form a right angle triangle, we will apply Pythagoras Theorem.

PR^2=PQ^2+QR^2\\

        = 10^2+30^2\\

        =100+900

        =1000

PR=10\sqrt{10}

Hence the shortest distance between P and R is 10\sqrt{10}.
