Raja Rammohan Roy is called as ‘Father of Modern India’ because he advocated progressive changes in nineteenth-century society of India and wanted India to be free from all social evils.

• Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a liberal thinker, scholar, and political activist in nineteenth-century India in Bengal Province. He was scholar in many languages including Bangla, Greek, Latin, etc.
• He was well-read person and knew very well about philosophies and thinking of the west.
• According to this, he advocated progressive social changes in Indian society. For this, he founded the Brahmo Samaj, a social group that worked for welfare of widows in India.
