let the total number of eggs be x
then,
(1/4+1/6)x=140  ..............................(because 1/4 of total eggs were sold on saturday and 1/6 were sold on sunday)
(3/12 +2/12)x=140
5x/12=140
x=140*12/5
x=336
therefore,total number of eggs is 336

in short
Add up one-by-four and one-by-six
add up the result of the addition of one-by-four and one-by-six with 140
your answer will come out

mevikas2000: if he sold 1/4 and 1/6 eggs of the total eggs then the answer will be let the total no. of eggs be x
he sold eggs on saturday=1/4 of x
=(1/4)x= x/4
he sold eggs on sunday=1/6 of x
=(1/6)x= x/6
eggs left= 140
according to the ques.

x/4+x/6+140=x
x/12+x/12+140=x (lcm of 4 and 6 is 12)
(3x+2x)/12+140=x
5x/12-x/1=-140
(5x-12x)/12=-140

-7x/12=-140 (minus signs get cancel
