Rajendra Chola I was a Chola emperor of South India
Explanation:
- The Ashvamedha or a horse sacrifice ritual was followed by ancient Indian kings so as to prove their imperial sovereignty. The horse is set loose and allowed to wander into other kingdoms . The king who frees the horse declares a battle against the king who stops the horse. But when the horse goes unharmed in a kingdom, that kingdom becomes a feudal part of the kingdom from where the horse was set free
- King Rajendra Chola I performed the horse sacrifice or Asvamedha and had done since he wanted to assert their supremacy over the other kingdoms. He earned the title Jayamkonda Cholan (The Victorious Cholan)
- Another ruler who performed the Ashwamedha sacrifce was King Pulakesin I, who belonged to Chalukya dynasty. He performed Ashwamedha Yajna to access power
