Chemistry, asked by hridyanshu2, 7 months ago

Raju and Reena were given a mixture of iron filings and sulphur powder. Raju heated his mixture
strongly and obtained a black mass, but Reena kept it as such. They divided the mixture further into
two parts and did the same tests.
6(a) Tabulate their observations when:
() both added dilute HCl to a part of their mixtures.
(ii) both added carbon disulphide to the second part of their mixtures.
6(b) Identify the black mass X and using both results that Raju observed how you can conclude that
the black mass is a compound.

Answer:

compound X is iron sulphide FeS which is formed when mixture of Fe and S is heated

note÷

FeS is homogeneous in nature and is a compound

adding HCl to FeS will yield FeCl2 and H2S.

reaction can be noticed by a small of rotten egg due to formation of H2S

adding CS2 will not give him anything.

experiment by Reena

Reena has not heated the mixture hence it is heterogeneous in nature and the properties of the mixture depends upon the compounds contained in it.

Adding HCl will dissolve Fe contained in the mixture to form a compound FeCl2 producing H2 and S will be left behind.

adding CS2 will dissolve S in the mixture just as water dissolves salt.

caution CS2 is highly flammable so experiment should be done carefully.
