Appropriate Question

Raju started from a point and walked 30m West in 5min.Then he turned south and covered 40m in 3min caluclate Raju's average velocity.

Answer

Given

Let the Raju's starting point be A.

Let Raju's Final point be c.

  • The figure in the attachment shows Raju's journey.

  • The dashed line in the colour red indicates Raju's displacement.

To Find

Raju's average speed.

Raju's average velocity.

Formula to be used

  • Average Speed =   \sf{ \frac{Total \: distance \: covered \: }{Total \: time \: taken \: }}

  • Average velocity =   \sf{ \frac{Total \: displacement \: }{Total \: time \: taken \: }}

Solution

To caluclate average speed :

Total distance covered by Raju AB + BC = 30 m + 40 m = 70 m

To caluclate average velocity :

Raju's displacement from A to C is AC.

Since,A ABC is right - angled triangle.

We can Apply the pythagoras theorem to caluclate the length of AC.AB² + BC² = AC².

30² + 40² = AC²

AC² = 900 + 1600 = 2500

AC = 50m

Average velocity =   \sf{ \frac{Total \: displacement \: }{Total \: time \: taken \: }}

Average velocity =   \sf{ \frac{50m}{480s }} = 0.104 m/s

Required Answer

  • Raju's average speed is 0.146 m/s

  • Raju's average velocity is 0.104 m/s directed from A to C.
