Ram and Vikram go to school together. They have to cross a small lake on boat daily while going to school. Generally, there are five to six persons in the boat to cross the lake. But one day, the boat was overloaded with about fifteen people. Ram and Vikram did not sit in the boat. After going some distance, the boat sank into the lake. Many people knew swimming
and those who did not know how to swim were saved by others. Ram and Vikram also saved the lives of three people and advised them not to sit in an overloaded boat.
(a) Why did the boat with five to six people easily cross the lake and float on water? (b) Why did the'overloaded boat sink in the water?

Ans. (a) The buoyant force of water on the boat with five to six people was enough to support the weight of the loaded boat, hence, the boat crossed the lake easily with five to six people.

(b) As more and more people get into the boat, the weight of the boat increases and it becomes lower and lower into the water. Due to this, the buoyant force on the boat increases. But if water level reaches up to the upper edge of the boat and even one more person sits in the boat then no further increase in buoyant force is possible and hence, the boat sinks.

(c).Due to buoyant force (upthrust).

(d). Due to the weight of overloaded boat.

(e) We should use the vehicles according to their capacity to avoid any accident.
