Given,

Ram finished the work in 5/16 hour

Suraj finished the work in 7/8 hour

To find,

The longer time taken by whom and how much longer time is taken.

Solution,

We can easily solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

The two fractional terms are

= 5/16 and 7/8

LCM of the denominator of those two fractional terms are -

Prime factorization :

16 = 2×2×2×2 = 2⁴

8 = 2×2×2 = 2³

Superset = 2⁴

LCM = 2⁴ = 16

By, maintaining the result of the LCM in the denominator of the two fractions, we can rewrite the fractions in the following way,

First fraction = 5/16 (Nothing to do here.)

Second fraction = 7/8 × 2/2 = 14/16

Among the two fractions, the second fraction is greater than the first fraction.

So, Suraj took the longer time.

Time difference = 7/8 - 5/16 = 14-5/16 = 9/16 hours

Hence, suraj took 9/16 hours longer than Ram.
