Step-by-step explanation:

Let d = amount of total property his daughter receives.

And we know that he leaves all of his property to the 3 recipients mentioned (wife, son, and daughter), so if you add up all of the fractions that each of the 3 got, it should equal 1. Therefore:

2/3 + 1/4 + d = 1

Which can be solved for do so that

d = 1 - 2/3 - 1/4

To add and subtract fractions, find the least common denominator (in this case would be the result of multiplying the denominators which gives us 1*3*4=12) and alter the fractions accordingly by multiplying each number by a multiple of 1/1 (because multiplying by 1 will not alter the value of the number) that will result in a 12 as the denominator (bottom) of each fraction. (i.e. 1/1 * 12/12 = 12/12 = 1/1, 2/3 * 1/1 = 2/3 * 4/4 = 8/12 = 2/3, 1/4 * 1/1 = 1/4 * 3/3 = 3/12 = 1/4)

d = 1 - 2/3 - 1/4 = 12/12 - 8/12 - 3/12

Now we can just add (or subtract) the numerators (numbers on the top) and leave the denominators the same giving us:

d = (12–8–3)/12 = (4–3)/12 = 1/12

Therefore d = 1/12 , so the daughter received 1/12th of the land
