ram's marks be 50%of X =50/100 *X = x/2
similarly Shyam's marks = 3x/10
difference in marks = 40
X/2 - 3x/10 = 40
5x - 3x /10 = 40
X/5 = 40
x = 200
total marks in examination = 200
