Answer:

Profit % = 31.25 %

Step-by-step explanation:

Let say CP  = 100C

& Marked Price = 100M

after giving X% discount  = (X/100)100M = MX

Selling Price = 100M - MX

earned a profit of 40%

Profit = (40/100)100C = 40C

=> Selling Price = 140C

100M - MX = 140C

after giving 2x%discount, he would have earned a profit of 5%

100M - 2MX = 105C

140C + MX = 105C + 2MX

=> MX = 35C

=> 100M - 35C = 140C

=> 100M = 175C

=> M = 1.75C

a discount of 25%

Selling Price = 100M - 25M = 75M = 75*1.75C  = 131.25C

Cost Price = 100C

Profit =  131.25C - 100C = 31.25C

Profit % = 31.25 %
