Given:

Distance from school to house= 4km

Time taken for forward journey= 10 minutes

Time taken for return journey= 20 minutes

To find:

Average speed

Average velocity

Solution:

(a) For finding the average speed-

Total distance/Total time

Here total distance= Forward journey+ Return journey =( 4+4)km = 8km

Total time =( 10+20) minutes= 30 minutes or 30/60 hour = 1/2 hour

So the average speed is:

8/(1/2) = 16km/hour

(b) The average velocity = Total displacement/ Total time

In this case, the displacement is zero as the person returned to the starting point.

Therefore, average velocity is also zero.

The average speed is 16km/hour and the average velocity is zero.
