. Raman is three years less than four times as old as Chen. In five years, the sum of their ages will be 42. Determine their current ages.

Let :

• Present age of Raman = x
• Present age of Chen = y

Given :

• x = 4y-3
• after 5 year sun of there age = 42

To find : There current age

Solution :

Raman age after 5 year = x + 5

Chen age after 5 year = y + 5

according to question,

=> (x+5) + (y+5) = 42

=> x + y + 10 = 42

=> x + y = 42-10

=> x + y = 32

=> x = 32 - y {1}

also , x = 4y - 3 {2}

putting value of x from equation 1 ,into equation 2

we get,

=> 32-y = 4y - 3

=> 32+3 = 4y+y

=> 5y = 35

=> y = 35/5

=> y = 7years

putting value of y in equation 1 , we get;

x = 32-y

x = 32 - 7

x = 25 years

ANSWER :

• Raman's current age = x = 25 years
• Chen's current age = y = 7years
