Solution :

Let number of days taken by Balaji is x days

So, The number of days taken by Ramesh is 3x days

According to the question,

3x - x = 40 days

2x = 40

x= 20

Hence, x=20 days

So, number of days taken by Balaji = 20 days and number of days taken by Ramesh = 3(20)=60 days

Assume total units of work = LCM (20 , 60) units = 60 units

So, work done by Balaji in one day = (60/20) = 3 units per day

Work done by Ramesh in one day = (60/60) = 1 unit per day.

Hence total units done by both Balaji and Ramesh together in one day = 4 units per day

So, total number of days taken by both of them is

Total work / Number of units done in one day =\frac{60}{4}=15 days.
