Green leaves contain chlorophyll, a green pigment which absorbs sunlight, essential for starch preparation.

On the other hand, variegated leaves have green and non-green colours. So the green parts absorb sunligh and prepare starch whereas non-green parts fail to do so.

Answer:

The parts of the leaf which were green turned blue-black, whereas the differently coloured parts of the leaf did not. Explanation: The green parts of the leaf synthesized starch due to the presence of a green pigment, chlorophyll, and thus turned blue-black with the addition of iodine solution.
