Concept:

The unitary method is a method for determining the value of a single unit from the value of many units and multiple units from the value of a single unit.

Given:

The cost of 2\frac{1}{2} kg potatoes= Rs. 30

The amount of money the shopkeeper returned=Rs. 352

Find:

(a) What was the cost of 15 kg of potatoes?

(b) How much money did Ramesh return to the shopkeeper?

Solution:

(a) The cost of 2\frac{1}{2}or \frac{5}{2}  kg potatoes= Rs. 30

The cost of 1 kg potatoes = \frac{30*2}{5}=Rs.12

∴ The cost of 15 kg potatoes =15*12=Rs.180

Hence the cost of 15 kg potatoes is Rs. 180

(b) The amount of money Ramesh gave to the shopkeeper =Rs.500

Actual amount of money the shopkeeper should return =500-180=Rs.320

But the shopkeeper returned = Rs. 352

∴ The amount of money Ramesh should return =352-320=Rs.32

Hence Ramesh should return Rs. 32 to the shopkeeper.
