Ramita said, I will go to Mumbai tomorrow is changed to indirect speech "Ramita said that she would go to Mumbai the next day".

Direct speech conveys the actual words of the speaker.

Indirect speech, others report the words spoken by the speaker.

Few rules that can be followed to change from direct to indirect speech:

  a. Change present tense in "direct speech" is changed to past tense in indirect speech. (will - would)

  b. Replace the commas and inverted commas (quotation marks) with the word, 'that'.

  c. Change the place and time: nearness expressed in direct speech changes to distance.

  Direct             Indirect

  Here              There

  Tomorrow      The next day

  Thus              So

  Today            That day

  These            Those

  d. Change the pronouns accordingly.

  e. Change the modals accordingly, can - could.

  f. Quotation, exclamatory, and question marks in direct speech are replaced with the respective reported form.
