Ramu, a farmer, lives in Punjab. He grows legumes in one season and wheat in the
next season.
(i) What is this practice known as?
(ii) How does this practice help in replenishing the nutrients in the soil?

(a) The practice of having different crops in different seasons is called Crop rotation.

(b) The Rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of legumes fix the nitrogen i.e. they convert nitrogen gas in the atmosphere into ammonia, which is absorbed by the plant to convert into Nitrogen. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, development and reproduction. It helps replenish the soil with the lost nutrients like nitrogen.
