Poisson's ratio, denoted by the Greek letter 'nu', {\displaystyle \nu }, and named after Siméon Poisson, is the signed ratio of transverse strain to axial strain. For small values of these changes, {\displaystyle \nu }is the amount of transversal expansion divided by the amount of axial compression.
