Ranjit Singh, the Lion of Punjab, was once walking along a road with his followers. Suddenly a stone struck his head. As the king stumbled with pain, his followers ran about searching for the
miscreant who had dared to harm their Sovereign.
They brought before the king a poor old woman who trembled in fear and dread
"Have mercy, Your Highness," she wept, "But I was only aiming at those apples on that tree. My
children have eaten nothing for three days and I struck the tree for its fruit. Woe on me that I
missed and hit you instead."
The king pressed his wounded head with one hand and ordered his Chief Minister to see that the
old woman received sufficient food and money.
The Chief Minister was quite taken aback.
"Your Majesty," he said in wonder, "You are rewarding the woman who struck you?”
What is there to wonder at?" said the king. If a lifeless tree can give fruit when it is struck,
shouldn't I, who am alive and have reason, give even more?”
