There are various types of categories of species created by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to identify the threat that any species may face in the recent times.
Explanation:
- A rare species is the one which is very uncommon and very rare to find because its population is reduced to such a level. The term is generally used for species which are very small in number and are generally found in an isolated geographical area.
- They posses a high risk of being endangered in the coming future. Examples of rare species are :- Giant panda, Cheetah, etc.
- Extinct species are the ones which are no longer present or alive on the earth and the last alive member of that particular species has been declared dead. The species becomes extinct due to various reasons, but the most common reason is due to habitat destruction or over exploitation, or hunting. Examples of extinct species are:- Dodo, Asiatic Cheetah, Passenger pigeon, Steller sea cow, etc.
