We first need to get to the number that is a multiple of both 3 & 4. This is 12.

1/3 * 4/4 (1; it still needs to be the same number.) = 4/12.

1/4 * 3/3 = 3/12. These two added together (3/12 + 4/12) = 7/12. That is the amount eaten. You then subtract 7 from 12 to find the uneaten portion. This is 5/12.
