Rashmi leaves home on her bicycle riding at a steady rate of 8km per hour. After half an hour her brother leaves homeon his bicycle following Rashmi's route. He rides at a steady speed of 12km per hour. How long after Rashmi leaves home will Sumit catch up?

let's assume that R and S meet at distance x km from their house
then time taken by R would be t(r)=x/8 hr
simil.ly time taken by S would be t(s) = x/12 hr
now A/Q
t(s) - t(r) = 1/2 hr (as S left the home later)
so we get
x/12 - x/8 = 1/2 which gives x = - 12 km
and we know that distance can't be negative therefore
S can't catch up his sis R as his speed is too slow
