2. Read the following passage carefully and answer any ten questions out of twelve:(10M)
1. The aim of education in the Indian tradition is to lead the student from darkness to light, to free her
from every kind of domination except that of reason. It instils in students values like fearlessness,
strength of conscience and integrity of purpose.
2. According to Swami Vivekananda, the ideal of education should be balanced growth of the individual.
It should aim at not only training the intellect but also infuse “grace and love into heart of man”. For
this purpose, it should impart both knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is the outcome of information.
Persistent assimilation of knowledge results in wisdom.
3. M.K. Gandhi argued that “latent, implicit and dormant potential perfection inherent in a being” can be
manifested by developing in her the capacities of “head, heart and hand”, that is knowledge, wisdom
and skill.
4. Plato says, “No amount of factual information would make ordinary man into educated or ‘virtuous’
man unless something is awakened in him, an innate ability to live the life of the soul.”
5. The Urdu terms Ilm, knowledge, and Irfan, wisdom, clearly show that knowledge and wisdom are two
different concepts. Our wisdom is founded upon our information. We cannot contemplate in a vacuum.
Without ilm, irfan is impossible. We may acquire knowledge but still be bereft of wisdom.
6. Wisdom does not comprise pieces of disconnected information in isolation; rather, it arises when we
logically analyse the given information and apply it to solve practical issues.
7. The Chandogya Upanishad asserts that a person well versed in the Vedas, Puranas and all other
shastras, sacred texts, on subjects ranging from song, dramatics and dance, the art of warfare and
governance, Astronomy and Astrology to Grammar and Mathematics, need not be wise. He can, at the
most, be said to be only mantravit, the knower of texts or theories or the knower of apara vidya, worldly
knowledge, but till the time he applies theory into practice, he cannot be said to said to have vidya,
knowledge. A synthesis of theoretical and practical knowledge alone leads to viveka, wisdom.
8. The Buddha says that the synthesis of lower and mundane knowledge, which he calls Samvriti Satya,
and the higher and supra – mundane knowledge, called Paramaartha Satya, leads to wisdom.
