This question is based on the concept of ratio and proportions.

Given:

Ratio of milk : water = 5 : 4

⇒ Milk = 5x

⇒ water = 4x

45 litres of mixture is taken out

⇒ Taking out mixture does not affect the ratio

⇒ Therefore the ratio remains at 5 : 4

15 litres of water is added to the mixture:

water = 4x + 15

There are  4 litres more milk than water now:

4x + 15 = 5x + 4

Solve x:

4x + 15 = 5x + 4

x = 11

Find the amount of water and milk after 45 litres have been removed:

milk = 5x

milk = 5(11)

milk = 55 litres

water = 4x

water = 4(11)

water = 44 litres

Find the amount of the mixture:

mixture = 55 + 44

mixture = 99 litres

Find the initial quantity:

Initial quantity = 99 + 45

Initial quantity = 144 litres

Answer: 144 litres
