Ravi drives 12 km towards west. he turns south and drives 3 km. he again turns east and drives 8 km. how far is he from his starting point ?​

Construction : (i) Draw a line parallel to the southern path joining the end point and the western path at the point vertically opposite to the end point.

(ii) Join the starting point and the end point.

Now,

We get a right-angled triangle where,

Base = 4 km

Altitude = 3 km

We have to find the displacement ,i.e, the hypotenuse.

According to Pythagoras theorem,

hypotenuse^{2}  = base^{2} + altitude^{2}

Here,

Displacement^{2} =  4^{2}  + 3^{2}

i.e, Displacement^{2} = 16 + 9

                             = 25

Therefore,displacement = \sqrt{25}

                                        = 5 km.
