let the the distance of his office from his residence be x

when the speed is 5km/h

time = distance /speed

time = x/5 hour = (x/5×60) min = 12x

when the speed is 5km/h

time = distance/ speed

time = x/15 hours= x × 15×60 = 4x ......

differences in both two case = 12x-4x = 8x

but differences time is given = 3+5+8 minutes.

so , 8x = 8 =1 km

hence the required answer is 1km.
